New to Massage?
What to Expect

Never had a massage before?
These are some of the most common questions we get asked. If you would like more information we are always happy to discuss your concerns before treatment. Your comfort is our #1 goal!

  • What should I wear/undress? We ask our clients to undress to their comfort level and that is whatever is comfortable to you; you are always covered by a sheet, and only the area being worked on is exposed unless discussed in advance with your therapist (most common in lymphatic drainage where the treatment generally takes place over the sheet). Most clients opt to wear what they normally wear to bed.

  • Do you reuse the same sheets or blanket? No! Everything is sanitized and clean for you and your treatment.

  • How much pressure is normal? You can ask for more or less pressure at any time. It helps to be aware that your preferences can change depending on which area of the body we are working on. At no time should the treatment feel intensely painful. It might at times be uncomfortable or have a "good pain" or releasing quality to it.

  • Is it normal to fall asleep or snore? Yes, it is common and considered a compliment to the therapist, indicating high relaxation.

  • How often should I get a massage? Frequency depends on your goals (e.g., injury recovery vs. maintenance), which the therapist will discuss with you.

  • Will I be sore afterward? Mild soreness for a day or two is normal, similar to after a workout.

  • What if I am self-conscious of my body? Massage therapists are professionals who look at your body from a lens of function vs. dysfunction. Many conditions of dysfunction put strain on the body system as a whole. We are there to help you to regain function without judgement.

  • What if I am self-conscious of my body hair? Body hair is not a hindrance to treatment. If you have areas that you prefer to shave it is best to book treatment when the hairs are longer and softer. This is especially true for deeper tissue treatments.

  • Should I talk during the session? You can choose to be silent or talk. It is your time to relax and often self connection works better with silence. Conversely, some areas might respond better to treatment with a little conversation. Do what feels right for you but please remember that it is not your job to entertain the therapist.

  • Do I need to shower before? It is not required, but appreciated.

  • What if I have specific injuries? Inform your therapist on the intake form, and they will discuss with you how they will adjust techniques accordingly.
